Description
In its early years, Kuo Yuan Ye was just a small shop of five pings. The owner would always lead by example, rolling up his pant legs made from flour sacks, and carefully washing the precious mung beans in the small creek beside the shop. After washing, the beans were placed into a large pot and stir-fried into a filling. To achieve a smooth and delicate texture, the chef would stand by the stove and slowly stir the filling for long hours. The masters often joked that their sweat drops were bigger than the mung beans themselves.
On the eve of the 1955 Mid-Autumn Festival, Mr. Chiang Kai-shek, who lived in the Shilin Official Residence, saw the long line of customers waiting to buy pastries outside Kuo Yuan Ye as he passed by on his way to Beitou to soak in the hot springs. Curious about the bustling scene, he asked his chief guard to purchase some. After tasting it, not only did President Chiang become hooked, but Madame Soong Mei-ling also savored it repeatedly, and it was designated as a diplomatic gift.
